Starting off I was very excited about The Golf Club 2. I was a fan of Tiger Woods PGA Tour since probably 2001 or 2002 but my liking of the game stuttered in 2007 when EA released a version with a broken achievement and never fixed it. I moved onto 2008 but wasn’t impressed. Unfortunately The Golf Club 2 makes me want to play Rory McIlroy PGA Tour 17. The graphics are nice, the character creation is nice, but it’s a lot of the little things that are missing.
When you’re lining up for a shot it’d be nice where the “landing area” really is instead of just zooming you out to a spot in the fairway. And then how about being able to change your club while zoomed in or adjusting your shot while zoomed in? All seem like simple things. A Power meter would be AMAZINGLY helpful with this game. Heck ALL golf games I’ve played have power meters, even 3D Ultra Mini Golf has a power meter. If not for the normal clubs, at least for putting having a power meter only makes sense! When you can put 100ft but have to guestimate between a 10ft put and a 15ft putt it is increasingly frustrating leaving multiple putts short or rimming one out.
I could see the option to turning it off to make it more difficult, but not having it at all is mind boggling. How about some sort of backspin indicator? I’m not talking the in-flight change my backspin like from TW, but some sort of indication pre-shot that I’m going to spin my ball off the green. Online play … well, we’ll get into that just a little bit. For the first 2 days since launch the servers have been essentially down and when they aren’t down you’re able to get through 3 holes and then they go down killing the mood to play more golf. When the network is down everything loads incredibly slow especially your character design and choosing clothing. Also when the servers were down I couldn’t go into lessons which is a big part of the game. Initially when installed I was wondering how the game was only 5GB and it seems a lot of the content is stashed online.
Graphics seem to be the strong part of the game. Everything looks really nice, the fairways, trees bushes. My only issue was when I was well off the fairway my ball went right through a rock. Not too impressive. The course editor is a nice touch. I can very easily see people making some nice courses and some incredibly inappropriate ones. And since the servers are currently working there are some VERY nice ones already.
This may not be the best game to play a solo round late a night. There is essentially no sound besides you golfing and the commentator often saying “nice shot” as you plunk one in the bunker. While it’s nice to play as your self on custom courses there is something to be said about playing real courses against PGA Tour players going for the FedEX Cup. I understand that’s all licensing but that’s a big draw that unfortunately EA owns. The Golf Club 2 plays more like a golf simulator than the game it was marketed to be. While it’d be fun to see custom courses it’s not enjoyable enough to play all the way through them and server issues on launch day leave little faith you’d reliably be able to play a full round.
